Gildar Gallery is pleased to present 1-800 Flowers a solo exhibition by artist Joey Cocciardi. In his ongoing excavation of the Romantic past associated with conquest and natural discovery as seen through the present, the artist continues to find a side-eyed kind of beauty. In his latest series, Cocciardi updates the nature print for the contemporary moment. Like botanists and illustrators of the Enlightenment plucking foliage in order to stamp its impression in history, Cocciardi forages through dollar stores and neighborhood bodegas collecting a bounty of synthetic specimens. Artificial flowers, condoms, hair brushes, grocery bags, party masks all make the cut. Pressed in rubber and resin, this uniformly plastic flora of the modern urban landscape is reproduced and preserved not for posterity, but in the service of an uneasy material pleasure. Already endlessly reproduced for easy consumption, the undying and overlooked undergrowth of today’s city finds itself memorialized in dazzling hues and classical compositions — a return to unreasonable attraction, etched in synthetic perfection.
